Today, I would like to tell you about the most challenging experience I've ever had – taking the IELTS examination. It's an ongoing struggle, and I have had my fair share of ups and downs along the way.

I want to talk about this because I have taken the IELTS exam five times and even contemplated quitting at one point. Honestly, I have never been fond of the exam, but I know it’s something I have to tackle.

Let me explain a bit more. After making the decision to study overseas, one of my biggest challenges was obtaining an IELTS certificate with a score of 6.5. This was a daunting task that caused me a lot of anxiety. It wasn’t very successful because the whole process felt overwhelming. There was a vast amount of material to cover, from writing essays to learning new academic vocabulary. Honestly, it was like trying to solve a complicated puzzle every time I sat down to study.

At first, I felt incredibly defeated. But then, I believed that if I really committed myself to the goal, I could make it. Yet, no matter how hard I tried, I kept scoring a 5.0. That was the only number I got each time, and I felt disheartened and frustrated.

Eventually, a teacher of mine gave me a lot of advice and encouragement. He told me that if I persevered, I would eventually succeed. So, I hold onto the belief that my hard work will pay off in the end.

New Vocabulary (with explanations in Vietnamese):

• Contemplated (verb) - nghĩ đến, cân nhắc. "I was thinking about quitting" có nghĩa là tôi đã nghĩ đến việc từ bỏ.
• Tackle (verb) - giải quyết. "I have to tackle the IELTS exam" có nghĩa là tôi phải giải quyết kỳ thi IELTS.
• Obtaining (verb) - đạt được. "I need to obtain a score of 6.5" có nghĩa là tôi cần đạt được điểm số 6.5.
• Daunting (adjective) - đầy thử thách, khó khăn. "It was a daunting task" có nghĩa là đó là một nhiệm vụ khó khăn.
• Academic (adjective) - liên quan đến học thuật. "Learning new academic vocabulary" có nghĩa là học từ vựng học thuật mới.
• Solve (verb) - giải quyết. "I had to solve a complicated puzzle" có nghĩa là tôi phải giải quyết một câu đố phức tạp.
• Defeated (adjective) - cảm thấy thất bại. "I felt defeated" có nghĩa là tôi cảm thấy thất bại.
• Committed (verb) - cam kết. "I committed myself to studying" có nghĩa là tôi đã cam kết học tập.
• Persevered (verb) - kiên trì. "I persevered despite the difficulties" có nghĩa là tôi đã kiên trì mặc dù gặp khó khăn.
• Pay off (phrasal verb) - đền đáp xứng đáng, có kết quả tốt. "My efforts will pay off" có nghĩa là nỗ lực của tôi sẽ có kết quả.

Idiom:

• Burn the midnight oil: to work late into the night. ("I had to burn the midnight oil to prepare for my exam.")

Phrasal verb:

• Give up: to quit trying. ("I almost gave up on the IELTS exam, but I didn't.")

1. Do you think nowadays people have a better work-life balance than in the past?

Main idea 1: I believe that in today's world, people are more mindful of maintaining a healthy work-life balance compared to the past. With the rise of flexible working hours and remote job opportunities, individuals can allocate time for both their personal and professional lives.

Supporting idea: For instance, companies are increasingly adopting policies that encourage flexibility, such as allowing employees to work from home or set their own schedules. This has led to greater satisfaction in personal and family life.

• Flexibility: (n) tính linh hoạt, dễ thay đổi. Nghĩa là khả năng thay đổi theo nhu cầu.
• Satisfaction: (n) sự hài lòng. Nghĩa là cảm giác thỏa mãn với điều gì đó.

Main idea 2: However, despite the progress, many still struggle to achieve a perfect work-life balance. High job demands and long working hours can be a hindrance to achieving this balance, especially in competitive industries.

• Hindrance: (n) sự cản trở. Nghĩa là một yếu tố gây khó khăn hoặc làm giảm hiệu quả của một việc gì đó.

Supporting idea: For example, many professionals in corporate sectors find themselves working overtime, which leaves little time for personal activities or family engagements. Consequently, this imbalance can result in increased stress and burnout.

• Corporate: (adj) liên quan đến các công ty hoặc doanh nghiệp.
• Stress: (n) căng thẳng, áp lực.
• Burnout: (n) kiệt sức, mệt mỏi do làm việc quá sức.

2. Why do many people want to be leaders?

Main idea 1: Many individuals aspire to be leaders because they seek autonomy and the ability to make decisions that can influence their surroundings. Being a leader allows a person to shape the direction of a team or organization, which can be incredibly fulfilling.

• Autonomy: (n) quyền tự do quyết định, độc lập. Nghĩa là khả năng tự chủ trong công việc hoặc cuộc sống.
• Shape: (verb) định hình, tạo ra. Nghĩa là tạo nên sự thay đổi hoặc phát triển.

Supporting idea: For instance, leaders in business can have the authority to make important decisions about company direction, which can lead to personal recognition and prestige. This is often seen as a reward for hard work and success.

• Prestige: (n) uy tín, danh tiếng. Nghĩa là sự kính trọng và giá trị mà một người hoặc tổ chức có được.
• Reward: (n) phần thưởng. Nghĩa là sự đền đáp xứng đáng cho những cố gắng và thành tích.

Main idea 2: Another reason people strive for leadership is the desire to influence and help others. Many leaders find satisfaction in guiding people, motivating them, and fostering a sense of unity within a group or organization.

• Desire: (n) sự khao khát, mong muốn. Nghĩa là sự thèm muốn đạt được điều gì đó.
• Sense of unity: (idiom) cảm giác đoàn kết, sự gắn kết. Nghĩa là sự hòa hợp giữa các thành viên trong một nhóm.

Supporting idea: Take, for example, social activists or non-profit leaders who aim to create positive change. Their leadership can result in the empowerment of others and the betterment of society as a whole.
