Ximending is a bustling shopping district in Taipei, known for its vibrant atmosphere and eclectic mix of street vendors offering a wide variety of goods and foods.

We visited Ximending on a Saturday night, which is undoubtedly the peak hour for the market. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by throngs of people walking in all directions. The sound of vendors shouting their best offers and music blaring from loudspeakers created a lively and chaotic scene.

IV. Part 3

1. Why do you think these cities attract so many people?

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi attract numerous people because they offer abundant opportunities for education, employment, and business. These cities host some of the country's top universities and multinational companies, drawing students and job seekers alike. For example, many students move to Hanoi to attend Vietnam National University, known for its prestige. Additionally, these cities provide better infrastructure, such as hospitals and transport networks, which are crucial for a higher standard of living. For instance, the Metro system in Ho Chi Minh City makes commuting much more convenient for residents. Moreover, these urban centers are seen as places of cultural significance, offering a variety of entertainment options like theaters, museums, and festivals. The Tet celebrations in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, for example, are a magnet for tourists and locals alike. All of this makes these cities hubs for both opportunity and culture.

New Vocabulary:

  • Abundant (dồi dào): Existing in large quantities.
  • Multinational (đa quốc gia): Companies that operate in multiple countries.
  • Infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng): The physical systems like transport, utilities, and buildings that support a community.
  • Convenient (thuận tiện): Making life easier or simpler.
  • Cultural significance (ý nghĩa văn hóa): The importance of a place or activity in the history or traditions of a society.
  • Magnet (nam châm): Something that attracts a lot of people or things.

2. Do you think there will be more or less green space in cities in the future?

I believe there will be more green spaces in cities as urban planners are becoming increasingly aware of the need to combat climate change. Many cities are investing in projects like urban parks and green rooftops to improve air quality and provide recreational spaces. For example, Ho Chi Minh City has been expanding its park system to address the rising demand for outdoor activities. However, some people worry that the relentless expansion of urban areas could limit the availability of land for green projects. For instance, many vacant lots are being turned into high-rise buildings instead of parks. Despite this, governments are implementing eco-friendly initiatives, such as planting trees along roads to reduce urban heat. A popular project in Hanoi, for instance, added over 1,000 trees to major streets last year. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so we need continuous efforts to create greener cities.

New Vocabulary:

3. Will people use bikes more or less in cities in the future?

I think bike use will skyrocket in the future as people become more environmentally conscious and cities invest in cycling infrastructure. Many urban areas are building dedicated bike lanes to encourage cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. For instance, Hanoi recently introduced bike-sharing systems in major districts, making it easier for residents to commute. Additionally, cycling is an affordable option compared to driving, especially with rising fuel prices, which motivates people to use bikes. However, safety concerns, like poor road conditions and traffic congestion, might discourage some people from adopting this mode of transport. For example, in Ho Chi Minh City, many riders feel unsafe due to the lack of traffic enforcement. Still, as governments prioritize sustainability, more people are likely to embrace cycling as a way to reduce their carbon footprint. It's clear that cycling has the potential to become a game changer in urban transport.

New Vocabulary:

  • Skyrocket (tăng vọt): To rise rapidly or suddenly.
  • Dedicated (riêng biệt): Designed or intended for a particular purpose.
  • Traffic enforcement (cưỡng chế giao thông): Measures to ensure compliance with traffic rules.
  • Sustainability (sự bền vững): Practices that do not harm the environment and can be maintained over time.
  • Game changer (điểm thay đổi lớn): Something that has a significant impact on a situation.

4. Why do you think people go to crowded places?

Many people visit crowded places because they offer enthralling experiences and opportunities for social interaction. These areas, such as shopping malls or walking streets, are often hubs for entertainment and leisure. For example, Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City regularly hosts live music and food festivals, attracting thousands of visitors. Another reason is that crowded places often provide ample opportunities to meet new people or network. For instance, professionals often attend conferences held in bustling city centers to connect with industry peers. However, the hectic atmosphere can also be a source of excitement for those who enjoy a lively environment. As the saying goes, “the more, the merrier,” which explains why some people find energy in large crowds. These factors make crowded places attractive to people looking for either fun or connection.

New Vocabulary:

  • Enthralling (thú vị, hấp dẫn): Captivating or extremely exciting.
  • Ample (phong phú): Enough or more than enough.
  • Hectic (náo nhiệt): Full of activity, or very busy.
  • The more, the merrier (tục ngữ): The more people involved, the better or more enjoyable something becomes.

5. Do you think there are some people who enjoy crowded places?

Yes, certain people thrive in crowded places because they are extroverted and love engaging with others. These individuals often feel energized by social interactions and find crowded spaces ideal for meeting new friends. For example, outgoing people might frequent night markets, where they can interact with vendors and other shoppers. Additionally, some people enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of these places, filled with noise, lights, and activity. Events like concerts or street festivals, for instance, offer a thrilling experience that can’t be replicated elsewhere. On the other hand, introverts may find such environments overwhelming. Nonetheless, for extroverts, crowded places are like a playground, allowing them to connect with others and feel a sense of belonging.

New Vocabulary:

6. Do you think it is a good trend to have more big cities?

In my opinion, having more big cities is both a boon and a challenge. On the positive side, big cities provide access to better education, healthcare, and job opportunities, which can uplift living standards. For instance, many people move to big cities to work for prestigious companies or attend top universities. However, urban expansion can also lead to problems like overpopulation and urban sprawl, which put pressure on resources and infrastructure. For example, traffic congestion in Ho Chi Minh City is a growing issue due to its rapid expansion. Nonetheless, with proper urban planning and investment in public transport, the benefits of big cities can outweigh the drawbacks. As the saying goes, “every cloud has a silver lining,” and challenges often lead to innovative solutions.

New Vocabulary:

  • Boon (lợi ích): Something that is helpful or beneficial.
  • Prestigious (uy tín): Highly respected or admired.
  • Urban sprawl (sự mở rộng đô thị): The uncontrolled expansion of urban areas.
  • Every cloud has a silver lining (tục ngữ): Even bad situations have positive aspects.
