IELTS TUTOR gợi ý bài tham khảo:

Well, the habit I'm going to talk about today is probably one that many people can relate to - spending excessive time browsing social media apps on my phone. It's something I find myself doing far too often, and it's definitely a habit I'm determined to kick.

I usually find myself glued to my phone throughout the day, mindlessly scrolling through various social media platforms without even realizing how much time has passed. It's particularly bad during breaks at work; what starts as a quick check of my newsfeed or a brief chat with a friend often spirals into hours of endless scrolling.

Now, why do I do it? Well, there are a few reasons. Firstly, I use social media to keep myself updated with the latest news and events. It's also a convenient way to stay in touch with friends and family, especially those who live far away. And let's be honest, sometimes I just need a bit of mindless entertainment, like watching funny videos or memes to unwind after a long day.>> IELTS TUTOR hướng dẫn PHÂN TÍCH ĐỀ THI 30/5/2020 IELTS WRITING TASK 2 (kèm bài sửa HS đạt 6.5)

But despite these reasons, I can't ignore the fact that it's a colossal time-waster. Most of the time I spend on social media doesn't really have any significant benefits, apart from providing momentary relaxation. I often find myself getting sucked into endless scrolling sessions, bombarded with tempting advertisements that only serve to distract me further.

This habit seriously affects my productivity. It's far too easy to get lost in the virtual world of social media and neglect important tasks that need to be done. Instead of being productive and focused, I find myself procrastinating and putting off work because I'm too busy checking my notifications or scrolling through timelines.

    V. Part 3

2.1. How do you balance life and work?

Today, I would say that maintaining a healthy work-life balance mainly comes down to setting firm boundaries and managing my time wisely.
First of all, I allocate (to distribute time or resources for a particular purpose – phân bổ thời gian hoặc nguồn lực) specific time slots for work, and I try not to let professional commitments spill over into my personal life.
For instance, once I finish my work for the day, I switch off my notifications and devote my evenings to exercise, family time, or simply unwinding.
This approach prevents me from becoming overburdened (having too many responsibilities or demands – bị quá tải) and gives me enough mental space to recharge.
Another strategy is to avoid taking on more responsibilities than I can realistically handle, because overcommitting (agreeing to do more things than one has time or ability to complete – nhận quá nhiều việc) can quickly throw my schedule out of balance.
If necessary, I delegate (to give a task or responsibility to another person – giao phó nhiệm vụ) less important tasks and learn to turn down requests that would unnecessarily eat into my free time.
For example, rather than trying to deal with every minor task myself, I prioritize high-impact work and leave routine matters for later.
Overall, I think the key is to establish a well-defined boundary (a clearly established limit – ranh giới được xác định rõ ràng) between professional obligations and personal well-being, so neither side constantly encroaches on the other.

    New vocabulary

    • allocate: to distribute time or resources for a particular purpose – phân bổ thời gian hoặc nguồn lực
      • Synonyms: assign, apportion, earmark
      • Antonyms: withhold, retain, squander
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “I allocate specific time slots for work.”
    • overburdened: having too many responsibilities or demands – bị quá tải
      • Synonyms: overloaded, overwhelmed, strained
      • Antonyms: unburdened, relaxed, carefree
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “This approach prevents me from becoming overburdened.”
    • overcommitting: agreeing to do more things than one can realistically manage – nhận quá nhiều việc
      • Synonyms: overextending oneself, overloading oneself, taking on too much
      • Antonyms: undercommitment, restraint, moderation
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:Overcommitting can quickly throw my schedule out of balance.”
    • delegate: to give a task or responsibility to another person – giao phó nhiệm vụ
      • Synonyms: assign, entrust, transfer
      • Antonyms: retain, withhold, undertake personally
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “I delegate less important tasks.”
    • well-defined boundary: a clearly established limit – ranh giới được xác định rõ ràng
      • Synonyms: clear limit, firm dividing line, distinct boundary
      • Antonyms: blurred boundary, ambiguity, lack of limits
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “I think the key is to establish a well-defined boundary.”

2.2. Will you continue doing something when you are aware that it’s a waste of time?

Yes, occasionally, although it really depends on whether the activity has some hidden value beyond simply being productive.
For one thing, I sometimes indulge in guilty pleasures (activities that one enjoys despite feeling they are not particularly useful or admirable – những thú vui mà bản thân biết là không thực sự hữu ích) because they provide emotional relief after a demanding day.
For example, I might spend an hour watching random videos online, even though I know that I could be doing something more productive.
That kind of downtime can help me blow off steam (to release stress or strong emotions – giải tỏa căng thẳng hoặc cảm xúc) and temporarily take my mind off work or study.
However, I would draw the line when such behaviour turns into mindless procrastination (delaying necessary tasks without a meaningful reason – trì hoãn một cách vô thức) and starts interfering with my responsibilities.
If I notice that I am repeatedly scrolling through social media instead of completing an important task, I usually put my phone away and get back on track.
For instance, setting a short time limit for entertainment allows me to enjoy myself without letting it eat into (to use up time or resources that could be used for something else – chiếm mất thời gian hoặc nguồn lực) my study time.
So, although I do occasionally waste time on purpose, I believe there is a significant difference between harmless relaxation and a habit that gradually undermines my productivity.

2.3. What kinds of things make people feel pressured?

I think people tend to feel pressured when they are faced with unrealistic expectations and a lack of control over their circumstances.
One major source is high-stakes expectations (expectations involving very important consequences – những kỳ vọng có hậu quả lớn) from parents, employers, or even themselves, particularly when success is measured against demanding standards.
For example, students may feel overwhelmed when they are expected to achieve excellent grades while simultaneously building a strong extracurricular profile.
Another contributing factor is constant comparison with others, which has become particularly problematic in the age of social media and can create a comparison-driven mindset (a way of thinking heavily influenced by comparing oneself with others – tư duy bị chi phối bởi việc so sánh).
People may see carefully curated images of other people's achievements and mistakenly assume that everyone else is more successful, attractive, or financially secure.
Financial insecurity can also compound (to make a problem worse by adding another difficulty – làm vấn đề trở nên nghiêm trọng hơn) the situation, especially when people are struggling with rising living costs, job instability, or debt.
For instance, someone who is already under pressure at work may become even more anxious if they are worried about paying their monthly bills.
Ultimately, pressure often arises from the feeling that one must constantly live up to (to meet a particular standard or expectation – đáp ứng một tiêu chuẩn hoặc kỳ vọng) other people's expectations while having very little room to make mistakes.

    New vocabulary

    • high-stakes expectations: expectations involving very important consequences – những kỳ vọng có hậu quả lớn
      • Synonyms: demanding expectations, critical standards, intense pressure

      • Synonyms: competitive mindset, comparative thinking, status-conscious attitude
      • Antonyms: self-acceptance, independent thinking, self-confidence
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “A comparison-driven mindset can create unnecessary pressure.”
    • compound: to make a problem worse by adding another difficulty – làm vấn đề trở nên nghiêm trọng hơn
      • Synonyms: aggravate, exacerbate, intensify
      • Antonyms: alleviate, ease, mitigate
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “Financial insecurity can also compound the situation.”
    • live up to: to meet a particular standard or expectation – đáp ứng một tiêu chuẩn/kỳ vọng
      • Synonyms: meet, fulfil, satisfy
      • Antonyms: fall short of, disappoint, fail
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “One must constantly live up to other people's expectations.”
    • financial insecurity: uncertainty about having enough money to meet one's needs – sự bất ổn về tài chính
      • Synonyms: economic uncertainty, monetary instability, financial vulnerability
      • Antonyms: financial security, stability, prosperity
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:Financial insecurity can also compound the situation.”

2.4. Why do some people refuse to abide by rules?

I think some people refuse to follow rules because they perceive them as unreasonable, restrictive, or inconsistent with their personal values.
The first reason is that people naturally resist rules that they believe infringe upon (to limit or violate someone's rights or freedom – xâm phạm hoặc hạn chế quyền tự do) their autonomy, particularly when those rules seem unnecessary or unfair.
For example, employees may become openly resistant if their workplace imposes excessive regulations that prevent them from making simple decisions independently.
Another reason is a desire to assert individuality, as some people see rule-breaking as a way of demonstrating independence or challenging authority.
This is particularly common among young people, who may develop an anti-authoritarian streak (a tendency to resist or question authority – xu hướng chống đối hoặc chất vấn quyền lực) as they become more independent.
For instance, a teenager might deliberately ignore a household rule simply because they want to prove that their parents cannot control every aspect of their life.
That said, people are also more likely to disregard rules when they do not understand their purpose, because a lack of awareness can weaken their willingness to comply.
Therefore, I believe rules are most effective when they are well-grounded (based on sound reasons or principles – có cơ sở vững chắc), clearly explained, and perceived as serving a legitimate purpose rather than simply imposing control.

      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “Young people may develop an anti-authoritarian streak.”
    • well-grounded: based on sound reasons, evidence, or principles – có cơ sở vững chắc
      • Synonyms: well-founded, justified, substantiated
      • Antonyms: unfounded, baseless, unjustified
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “Rules are most effective when they are well-grounded.”
    • assert individuality: to demonstrate one's independence and unique identity – khẳng định cá tính/sự độc lập
      • Synonyms: express independence, demonstrate uniqueness, establish identity
      • Antonyms: conform, submit, assimilate
      • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: “A desire to assert individuality.”
